Yipee! The Independent Party of Oregon has just nominated Oregon Senate candidate Jeff Merkley! This is great news for the Merkley Campaign considering the Independent Party boasts over 22,000 members and is growing rapidly. The Independent Party is now the third largest party in the state which is pretty impressive considering they just formed back in 2007. John Frohnmayer had been running for the Independent Party's nomination but he bowed out of the race back in June. More below the fold....
Full disclosure, I am the netroots director for OR-Sen candidate Jeff Merkley
Here's what Linda Williams the state chair of the Independent Party of Oregon had to say about nominating Jeff Merkley:
"We are supporting Jeff Merkley because he is the true `independent' in this race," said Linda Williams, state chair of the Independent Party. "Gordon Smith is very dependent - dependent on the utilities, drug companies, and other corporations for the millions of dollars he is spending on ads denying his record as a Bush Administration rubber stamp. He has voted repeatedly against campaign finance reform, including the McCain-Feingold reforms in 1997 and 2002, and has denounced voter-enacted campaign finance reforms in Oregon. He has been the Republican point-man against campaign finance reform on the TV talk shows."
Dependent is right. Gordon Smith has taken more money from lobbyists than any politician in Oregon's history. Smith has taken nearly one million from big pharma and the insurance industry. Smith has taken over $300,000 from big oil. Smith also had no problem pocketing $39,000 from indicted Republican Senator Ted Stevens. Democrats, Independents and Republicans in Oregon deserve a Senator who governs for them and not the special interests.
Here's Jeff Merkley's response to the nomination:
"I am honored to accept the nomination from the Independent Party of Oregon," said House Speaker Jeff Merkley, candidate for U.S. Senate. "I have been proud to fight alongside the Independent party to take on special interests to pass sweeping ethics reform, protect consumers, and end the gridlock in Oregon. Washington D.C. is broken and Gordon Smith is part of the problem. America needs new, independent leaders to change Washington D.C. and turn this economy around."
America does need new leaders and Merkley is definitely fit for the job. Here in Oregon, Merkley took on the payday lenders and capped their insane interest rates. Merkley balanced the state's budget and managed to increase public education funding by 18%. Merkley passed the most expansive renewable energy package the state has ever seen and led the greenest session we've had in the last thirty years. Merkley passed the card check and lowered prescription drug prices. That's leadership. That's real representation.
If you'd like to throw some change to the Merkley Campaign and help us defeat Gordon Smith go here.
